It's a fascinating experience going into a NFL stadium for a team that isn't your favorite yet having to sit in the smack dab middle of rabid fans. I attended the Cincinnati Bengals vs Baltimore Ravens game last night in downtown Cincinnati. The stadium is an easy walk from the downtown hotels and I couldn't pass up a chance to watch an NFL football game in person when I'm practically within throwing distance to the stadium.
I got out of my training class around 5pm and decided to go find a place downtown with my co-workers to have a couple of beers and eat dinner prior to the game. Nice idea but when there are also 70,000 crazy fans walking around downtown, all of the bars and restaurants were jam packed. We first tried to get a seat at the Rock Bottom Brewery at Fountain Square but were told that there was a 90 minute wait. Even the bar was 3 people deep just trying to buy a beer. We left that place quick and headed around the corner to another popular drinking hole - The Cadillac Ranch All American Bar and Grill, but again, this place was overflowing with black and orange Bengal fans. So that place was out of contention as well.
Luckily, one of the locals suggested that we head over to The Martini Club over below the Hilton Netherland Plaza - the place I was staying at. This place had a lot of Bengals fans too, but at least there were still places to sit down at. This place wasn't exactly a restaurant, but they had some hot appetizers, so we ordered drinks and nachos. I was hungry at that point so we went through a couple orders of the chips, cheese and salsa. The beer wasn't bad - I had a Honey Brown Ale, one of my favorite stand-bys.
The game was slated to start at 7pm and at the crack of 6:30pm the place suddenly emptied out and we knew we had to head for the stadium. It's a nice 10 minute walk from the hotel to the stadium. However, outside the stadium, all of the sidewalks bottleneck into just a couple of entry spots and the crowds trying to get in were like a huge cattle yard prior to slaughter. It was freaking jam packed and the lines weren't going down that much getting in. It took us until 5 minutes AFTER kickoff just to get into the stadium. By that time, the Ravens had blown their opening drive and were punting back to the Bengals.
Wow. Talk about a sea of orange and black. I hadn't seen that much Orange since the old Orange jersey days of the Denver Broncos. About 9 out of every 10 people in the stadium were wearing expensive authentic NFL jerseys. Man - talk about a walking sporting goods store. I bet there must have been over a $million worth of jerseys in that stadium alone - I kid you not. I finally got my seat in the middle of the upperdeck row surrounded by rowdy, and I mean ROWDY, Bengals fans. They were the type to yell at the top of their lungs on every play and STAND UP THE WHOLE FREAKING GAME. If you sat down, you'd get a mean look and were practically ordered to stand up and cheer. OK, I can handle that, but I was hoping to sit down after having stood in line for nearly 30 minutes to get in the gates.
Luckily for me, the Bengals were looking awesome in the 1st quarter. They must have gotten 3 turnovers in the first 7 minutes of the games. Then Chad Johnson got his touchdown and the crowd went ga-ga over him. This place was loud and pumped up. I could feel my voice going out by the end of the first half, so I knew to shut my mouth and just clap the rest of the game. I was still hungry and grabbed a brat from the concession stand. Word of advice, avoid the brats - they were NOT what I was expecting. They looked like an albino hotdog (white) and did not taste cooked. Blech. At least the beer was good as they were selling Warsteiner on tap there.
Near the early part of the fourth quarter, the Ravens had somehow come back and went ahead by 1 point. Here is where two Ravens fans, clad in their white and purple jerseys, stood up and started cheering on the Ravens at the top of their lungs while the rest of the crowd quieted down. Unfortunately for me, they were seated just in front of me and to the side slightly. They were one of a rare few who dared wear the opposing jerseys into the game. Some insults started flying from a few mean tempered Bengals fans from up above and it wasn't long before a few plastic beer bottles half full of beer were flung down onto the two Ravens fans. The beer was flying everywhere and I had to actually get up and move out of the area for a few minutes while things settled down a bit. When I got back to my seat, it was wet from the flung beer. Security moved in right after that and things settled down luckily. It's a shame a few fans nearly ruined the game for several of us.
The last few minutes of the game was nail biting as the Bengals defense had to put up a goal line stand for about 12 plays in a row. There were penalties and pushing and shoving and players getting hurt, but in the end, the Bengals got a lucky tip interception to seal the game. The stadium was going wild. Who Dey! Who Dey! Who Dey!
It also took over 40 minutes to get out of the stadium after the game for the same reason, too many bottlenecks and narrow exits from the outer sidewalks. Somebody did NOT design that stadium for a quick and easy exit. I'd hate to see a panic situation outside of the stadium as there would be a LOT of trampled fans trying to get to the few outgoing sidewalks. It probably didn't help that the Cincinnati Reds were playing in town that night either.
By the time I got back to the hotel, I was hot, sweaty and tired. The humidity was thick even though it was in the low 70s. It was a great game and probably worth the premium price I paid for a ticket to the game. One things for sure, the NFL has got a good thing going with the fans right now. I'm just glad the Bengals won otherwise that crowd could have gotten ugly in a hurry.
Today was spent trying to recover from the late night and several beers that I drank at the game. There certainly isn't a shortage of beer in this town, that's for sure. I'll try to post some pics from the game after I get back to Colorado on Saturday. I can't post them now because I didn't bring a card reader with me, plus my USB ports on my laptop don't seem to be working anymore. Ah well. I go to the Reds game on Thursday and will have even more shots from that event. More later from the Queen City hopefully tomorrow.
Fall is quickly returning to Colorado. This morning's temperature was in the low 40s and I actually had to wear a jacket on my way to the airport at 8am. I'm glad I had it with me as the air was a bit nippy as I stood outside and filled up my gas tank. Once the mercury dips down to around 40, the trees will start changing quickly. Look for the mountain aspens to start turning gold very soon.
I got to the airport a bit after 9am this morning. I had an 11am flight to Cincinnati on Delta airlines and of course, I was piled into the back of the packed plane seated next to a big guy. At least I had the window seat and could lean against the window. As the guy took his seat next to me, he said something to the effect: "Guess you're probably wishing I was a skinny young girl huh?". Well duh. I'd prefer that over his big ass any day. We pretty much ignored each other the rest of the flight as I put on my MP3 player and listened to tunes for the entire 2.5 hour flight.
Landing in Cincinnati, once the plane door was swung open, you could just feel the heat and humidity pour into the airliner. Blech, I certainly don't need my jacket now. The Greater Cincinnati Airport registered around 90 degrees. I passed by a TV monitor to try to catch some NFL scores from earlier in the day. My Broncos were losing by 2 points late in the game. I had to fly out on opening day and miss the game but I was determined to catch up on all of the latest scores. I quickly took a taxi from the airport and headed to downtown Cincinnati. I have a room at the Hilton Netherland Plaza, just a block from Fountain Square. I don't have a good view of anything other than an adjacent building, but looking out the window is not part of my agenda. I'm here for another training class with my work team, but I'm also here for some fun.
Tomorrow night is opening night for Monday Night Football and I scored a ticket to the Bengals / Ravens game tomorrow night at 7pm EDT. I'm real excited about that. This will be my first trip to Paul Brown Stadium and my 4th NFL stadium game. I've got end zone seats in the upper deck but regardless, this sold out game is going to be a good one.
The fun doesn't end there though because on Thursday afternoon, the boss is taking our team out to Great American Ballpark for a baseball game too. I get to see the Reds take on the St. Louis Cardinals in a business man's special. It's certainly a nice way to spend the week and break up an otherwise boring training class.
I've been totaling up my fantasy football points for all of my Fantasy Sports Live games. I'm entered into 4 contests and am probably going to cash in 3 of 4 of them. Unfortunately, the one I'm losing at is the weekly Blogger Fantasy Football Battle contest. I mixed it up between all of my 4 games and took the wrong chances with my most expensive match of the week. At least I'm winning my two regular season long Fantasy Football matches as well.
Seeing how tonight I'm on my own, I'll probably play a bit of online poker while I watch the Dallas Cowboys vs New York Giants football game. I'm going to play what's left of my meager bankroll on Stars and treat it like a personal challenge again. I'm going to avoid No Limit for a while and focus on grinding at the limit tables. Ya, it's going to be slow going, but at least I'm not going to go through it fast.
I brought a surprise for my boss in my suitcase. I smuggled a 6-pack of New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale in my suitcase along with a big bottle of New Belgium's "La Folie" Sour Brown Ale. The "La Folie" beer is a special limited edition beer that is hand bottled in a large 22-oz bomber bottle and corked like a wine. It even has a limited edition number written on the bottle. I'm going to share this bottle with my work team. These guys can't get Fat Tire beer here in Cincy and they've been bugging me to bring out some Fat Tire for the last two years. Well, I finally did it and I can't wait to see their faces when I pull it out of my briefcase at the end of the day.
Well, the sun's going down and the next football game is about to start. I'll blog more tomorrow after I get back from the Bengal's game. Stay tuned!

I'll let the pictures do the talking. I had suffered a bad beat previous hand when my pocket Aces (that I raised) were called by a low stack with 6-3 offsuit who magically hit a straight on the river. Very next hand, I had to push with my pocket Tens. Two of the three limpers called me. Think my flopped trips were good?

The doom switch is back on full blast on Stars. I think I'll take up World of Warcraft again...

I've gotten my 1st weeks fantasy football picks locked in over at Fantasy Sports Live's Blogger Fantasy Football Battle weekly competition. And for what it's worth, I was able to find an early posting mistake and snarfed up WR Steve Smith (Carolina) for a mere 30 points because they confused him with WR Steve Smith (NY Giants) and put a 110 point price tag in the NYG rookie. I notified FSL of the mistake and they told me I could keep Smith from Carolina for 30 points as long as I didn't try to change my roster. They've now gotten the issue corrected, but that little mistake allowed me to save 80 points and put it into another decent player. I won't spill the beans on who my other 8 starters are as I want to keep that a secret.
I've already bought in on 3 FSL football contests for week 1 at the $10, $5 and $1 levels and might just add one or two more just to make things fun. If you haven't signed up yet for Fantasy Sports Live you bloggers - better hurry up. The Blogger competition starts tomorrow.
Alas, for some reason, we can't pick players (yet) from the Thursday or Monday night games. So just the Sunday games count for this opening week. A shame too, most of the highest scoring games are expected to be on Thursday and Monday, so some of the best players won't be "pickable" for week 1. Hope this isn't a trend.
Just when I thought I've seen it all in poker, I get a frequent reminder that there are always lessons to be learned, and most often the hard way.
I decided to go for it this holiday weekend and play at a higher level. Despite the fact that I am NOT bankrolled for playing at the $2/$4 Limit Holdem level, I felt that I was skilled enough to handle myself at that level. I knew that on the weekends on PokerStars, the sharks come out to feed and are always on the prowl. So prior to sitting down at one of the 2/4 limit tables, I spent some time observing and taking notes on a particular table that looked good. I sat down and loaded up $100 (25 BB) and proceeded to play. For the first 45 minutes, I was holding my own. I was up about 1 BB and was choosing my plays carefully but I wasn't making a lot of headway.
Then I was dealt pocket Jacks while sitting in middle position. A fairly loose player limped in from early position and I raised to try to isolate on him. I got 2 other players that called me. One from the Button and the Big Blind, as well as the original limper. The flop came Ace 4 4. Just the kind of flop that pocket Jacks don't want to see when you have 3 opponents with you. The action of course checks to me and I wanted to see just how many players had an Ace and bet out. This may not have been the best hand to cbet with but there might be a chance I could get a weak Ace to fold. There was only 1 caller, the original limper. He was loose and I felt I might be able to get him to fold if I played this right.
The turn card was a beauty - my 3rd Jack. I now held full house Jacks over 4s and was looking for grab my first big pot. To my surprise, the limper bets out 1st and I oblige him by raising back. I was surprised again when he reraised me back. OK, so what did he have? Ace Jack? That was my assumption and I gladly capped the action.
The river card was a meaningless rag and again, the limper bets out. I still felt I had the best hand and raised him again, but again he re-raised me back. My spider senses were now tingling and I felt something was up. Instead of capping it, I simply called. My opponent turns up pocket Aces for Aces over 4's. Oh crap. His limp with pocket Aces paid him off, and nicely. I had just lost a ton of chips on this hand with what I felt was surely the best hand. I was immediately down about $35 bucks now.
It was only 10 hands or so later that this same scenario played out when again, another player limped in with pocket Aces and beat out my trip Kings with his trip Aces and I had lost another monster pot. All that patience and grinding had now put me in a massive hole that I was not about to climb out of. Ouch.
Has limping in with pocket Aces and facing 4-5 opponents on a hand suddenly become popular? Why would players at this level want to do that? Especially in limit holdem? Perhaps those players were hoping that there would be another aggressive player on the hand and help chase out the other players. It's quite a risk limping in with Aces and if you let someone in cheap to see a flop you might regret that decision. But, for whatever reason, I was the victim of limping Aces twice in one session. I was now down over $70 and decided I had enough of that table and that limit. I returned to the $1/$2 level and played for another hour there but again lost a few major hands when I felt I had the best of it. It seems that the doom switch had been turned back on for me, only this time it had some major implications for me to my meager bankroll. I had literally lost about half of my bankroll this weekend when I had great hands. Wow. That hurts. The poker gods seems to have taught me another expensive lesson and that lesson is - don't play at higher limits if you're not rolled properly for it. Big beats at higher levels can cripple your bankroll.
So now I'm faced with a very low bankroll and facing the possibility of probably ending up bust in the next week or so. I'm not even properly bankrolled for $1/$2 anymore either thanks to the major beating I took. And seeing how I don't have an easy way to refresh it, or the desire to, I'm stuck with the possibility of not playing much poker at all for a while. I feel like Matt Damon getting cleaned out by KGB in a big game. My best hands being pounced on my hidden monsters. My aggression turned on me and allowed someone to clean me out but good. I guess everyone gets cleaned out at least once in their poker careers. And this one leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. And since fantasy football is now starting up this week, I feel that this may be my "out" for a bit from poker.
I think what's left of my PokerStars account will be treated now as nothing more than challenge money. I'll have to play my absolute best to have any shot at building that back up. But that's what I'm going to do. Just grind it out at the lower levels and try to build it back up. I'm not looking forward to playing back at the .50/1.00 level, knowing how suckouts are the rule here, but it might allow me to work on my game again and refine it a bit. There's not much I can do when I lose with Full House. I even got beat out by quads this weekend when I held top trips. Ouch. Perhaps it's God's way of telling me I should be focusing on other things for a while.

I now truly believe that online poker for me is now just an appetizer to life, a warm up for the evening, an after thought following a busy day. No longer is it my obsession or my focus. Now, playing online poker is something to take in small bites. I've gone off the online poker bandwagon following my summer trip to Alaska. Being away from the daily grind for a while made me realize just how much time I had been spending on poker and how it had altered my attitude. I realize that I was trying to be too much of a perfectionist. I was never satisfied with my play. I kept trying to turn myself into an aggressive play despite all of my natural instincts to play it safe. I was never comfortable playing at higher levels, rather I didn't want to play at those levels as that would be taking too much risk with my meager disposable income. I never intended for online poker to take as much focus in my life. But it did.
Now, I'm playing online poker very sparingly and am somewhat enjoying it more when I do. I try not to take beats too harshly as I now come to expect all kinds of play. Last night, I played in a 9-player $10+1 NLHE Sit-n-Go. I started off playing good drawing hands and getting cheap looks at flops but with no luck on the flop and facing decent aggression from other players. The few times I tried stealing pots I was met with strong resistance. I realized that I was being bluffed on a lot and decided to use that to trap some players. I tripled up at one point when my pocket Aces were played seemingly perfectly in order to entice two other players with inferior and dominated hands to call me. I ended up busting out in 3rd place, in the money, when I pushed post flop with top pair vs my opponents two over cards (AK) which managed to catch an Ace on the river. It seemed hard to believe that the 2nd place player wanted a horse race and called my all-in with just an Ace high. Hmmm, oh well, that's poker.
I'm spreading out my leisure time activities between all kinds of things now. I'm still writing occasionally on my sports blog. I'm always collecting new casino chips whenever I get the chance. I've started playing around with sound editing software Audacity and working on my podcasting skills. I'm thinking about getting back into home brewing beer again. I'm also involved in my son's scout troop. I'm out stargazing at night. And I'm playing fantasy football in multiple leagues. So ya, I'm staying busy, just not as much on poker.
So has the online poker boom gone bust? Well it has for me. I'm still rereading some of my poker books on occasion and also using them as fodder for practicing my podcasting by reciting chapters into a microphone. I'm trying to record some of my favorite poker chapters onto MP3 files and putting them on my MP3 player so I can listen to tips while I drive to work.
I still enjoy reading all the poker blogs and keeping up with how all of you are doing in the various blogger tourneys and activities so keep it up! Still here and still playing on occasion but now just for fun. If you ever have an event on PokerStars let me know about it and I'll try to attend on occasion.

It's been a crazy summer. I'm almost glad it's over. I took a total of 6 days off of work this summer in June, but other than that, I've had little time off from work. July and August have been crazy with new projects and I'm wishing I would have taken at least 1 more week off, after all, I've built up 6 weeks of vacation time at work and I see little chance to use any of it until the holidays at the end of the year.
I'm wallowing when it comes to focusing back in on poker. My latest foray back into poker lately has been on the limit tables. I'm teaching myself to be an aggressive post-flop player, something that I've sorely lacked at over the last few years. Trouble is, I've been too aggressive at the wrong times lately and I've been paying a price for it. Take last night for example, I flop trips with my pocket 6's and start playing aggressive on a Queen high flop. I'm getting a lot of action from someone who limped in pre-flop and I take it to mean that this play hit top pair. Wrong, I was fighting on the losing end of a flopped set over set. He had pocket Queens and I lose a huge pot - nearly capping it on every post-flop street.
Another hand I was being aggressive on. I held Ace King offsuit. I raise pre-flop and am smooth called by the Small Blind. Flop comes up Ace Queen Queen. SB checks and I bet and am called. Turn comes up a beauty Ace. SB checks and I bet again but this time I am re-raised. I figure this character has an Ace as well so I just call. The river is a rag. SB bets and I call. SB turns over pocket Queens for quads and my Aces over Queens is no good. Sigh. Another big pot lost. After a couple other failed hands over the next 30 minutes, I leave the table and hit a $15 Turbo NL SNG. My night ends quickly after I get into a horse race with 6 players left with Ace King suited pre-flop. My opponent turns over pocket Queens (my bane for last night) and I don't catch any over cards. I stand up in 6th place. So much for poker.
I've also been playing some video games lately. I picked up Madden 2008 for the PC this week and have been struggling to learn that. I've also re-activated World of Warcraft on a 10-day free trial of The Burning Crusade. I've been enjoying that again for the last week but am NOT going to ante up and renew my monthly subscription again. The draw to sink all my time into that is all too tempting and I know from past experience that I cannot and should not get back into that if I value my family and my sanity. So, as of tomorrow, my 10-day free trial ends and I'm off of it again. Wow is fun, but all too time consuming.
My other passion lately has been fantasy football. I've been actively getting ready for two upcoming drafts I have next week. I joined a premium service over the The Huddle and have been sports blogging about the upcoming NFL season over at Chipper Sports for the last two months. I'm also anxiously awaiting the start of Blinder and Joe Sample's Fantasy Sports Live fantasy football season and testing my football knowledge over there. They just released their scoring rules for the upcoming season today, so go check it out on their blog. I like their scoring system, but don't agree with how they "penalize" kickers for kicking short field goals.
So as you can see, I've been pulled in many directions lately. I gotta keep busy doing something or else I go stir crazy. I'm glad I still have my job but dayum it's driving me nuts at times. That's why I have to blog about it to relieve some stress.
