May 11th was my 1st post if your interseted in my donkey beginnings.
Well last month was kinda tough, having to dig myself out of a $2,000 hole due to WSOP, but on a good note I was able to squeeze out June and few hundred bucks ahead after adding in bonuses and rakeback. I've been really focused the last 2 weeks on updating my stock research, which I did. Last night I was finally able to start pulling some hands from poker tracker (Online poker tracking software) and inject them into my own spreadsheet to better analyze the data.Over the last month and a half I've playing 10/20 6 handed cash games on Absolute Poker and have done pretty well over all, considering it has been in short spurts and I am basically "winging it", which typically isn't a winning strategy, but I am going to hold off the next couple days so I can figure out all my stats and plug some of the obvious leaks in my game. So far I'm up $1700 in less than 30 hours of single table play, which is great, but far from a reliable amount of time put in to tell.
AP took me for a b-slap. They offer 50% and 100% bonuses up to around $200 each and then right after changed their Player Loyalty Program making it a bit harder to earn the bonuses...basterds. However, they are one a few sites who offer rakeback for all cash games and tournaments that doesn't subtract bonuses from rakeback.
Mmy buddy T_Dawgonu has been doing pretty well at multi's. It seems like every other day he's finishing deep. He's missed a few BIG cashes and trips to Aruba over the last month on the flip of a single card. He did take 2nd in a multi cashing for $5k. I'm sure he'll hit something big soon the way he's been finishing deep. I personally haven't played many multi's until a few times recently, in which I was chip leader in a few only to get screwed over by some bad hand or most recently couldn't get myself to fold AA's after the flop knowing I was beat. That probably is what pissed me off the most. I watch many amateurs every day call down to the river with top pair regardless of the raises their opponents throw at them, desperately hoping that it's just a bluff or their opponents are overly optomistic and for me to do the same thing drives me crazy!!!! Anyways, I hope todo some good poker studying which I hope will pay dividends by August.
One other thing that's been bugging me lately is my home game play. My bud T_dawg throws a little home game once every couple months and I have to say for considering myself to be close to semi-pro level, I usually SUCK. Most of the time it seems I start well and blow my stack trying to out-manuveur players who won't fold and by the time I start to pick up some tells the games over for about 2 months. Now it's not like I'm trying to make a killing in some 20-$50 home games, but I've just noticed I've definately got some leaks in patience and it pisses me off a little when I should know better.
Hopefully, I can keep up with the posts now, however I need to bone-up on my exercise cuz I'm getting a beer belly and I don't drink? Before the baby was born I took time off work and weighed about 175, when I went back to work in January I was 193. Since then I figured it would go back down once I started working, but I guess I'm finally being punished for eating fast food twice a day amongst alot of other garbage and now I'm up to 197. I've been starting to jog by my house here and there and have gone surfing a couple times. I think this summer I'll be able to surf maybe once a week and maybe I'll mix in some basketball.
GL at the tables or anywhere else I guess, questions and comments are appreciated. Donkeyherder

Well coming back to work after about 2-3 weeks off was definately not fun times, however, I am feeling pretty good. I gotten alot of things squared away and have played well since my last shot at this years WSOP earlier this month. So far I've been able to win back the $2,000 I lost in Vegas, mainly sticking to 10/20 6 handed limit cash games. After my successful run while playing in Yosemite, I decided to put a little more time into this particular type of game. It seems there's much more easy money in the cash games. The only problem with playing cash games is the huge swings you take. Normally in a day I would win or lose $200-400 playing med-hi limit sit-n-go's, but since playing cash games I would say the swings would be more like $400-1000. At that rate you need a substantial bankroll to bail you out if you lose or drop down in stakes. Per hour I'm currently making $70 on a single 6 handed limit cash game, which is maybe double what I might take home playing a single SNG at a time. However, It's an extremely small sample size to base my results on and it's much harder for me to play more than 1 table playing cash games which are much more understanding your opponents vs. grinding out SNG's requires much less of that for me, especially since I have a ton of experience and can play them in my sleep. So for now it's a wait and see. Another beneifit of cash games is you usually rack up more rakeback and player points.
My wife's off work for the next few months so now I am also more focused and have a little more time to play multi's. Since Yosemite I am up another $1,100 and have kept my losing days below $300, which for me is good. I would say If you can keep your worst losing days low by pulling out of bad games, dropping down in stakes after bad runs, and not letting big profits slide down the tubes by setting a limit. Sometimes I'll buy-in for $400 and run it up to $1200 and tell myself I'll play until I drop down under $1000 and freeroll it until I get to $1,500 or $2,000 or many times I get a good start and get up to $800 and then fall back down after hours of play to $500 and force myself to take a $100 prfit, because obv. things aren't going my way and walking away with any kind of profit keeps confidence levels up.
I haven't spoken too much of the stock market tracking I do, but it is extremely time consuming and I have been collecting data day-in and day-out for over 6 years and have a massive database which I breakdown every conceivable way. The problem I facing lately is with the new baby my free time is extremely precious and I have a large enough sample size to start tightening my requirements. I am now only tracking stocks with a 750k avg daily volume (up from 500k) and am cutting out some of the slower moving stocks. Overall my adjustments will result in tracking about 40% fewer stocks and give me much needed extra time to research and track my poker play, esp. the cash games which I have little databased on my own. I do have "poker tracker". Which is software which gives you alot of good gametime data on opposing players and aides to my own personal note taking, but when researching your own play is difficult to factor in many other important variables and doesn't let your break down their database anyway you want. I think it's great for people who just won't do the work, but not enough for those looking to make it big and take it to the next level.
For now I think I'll stop and eat some breakfast. I might be going surfing today with my bro at Huntington Beach, CA. I'm getting out of shape and desperately need the exercise so I can't wait to surf it up this summer. GL all at the tables, or stocks, or life, etc. Questions andcomments appreciated. Donkeyherder

May 11th was my 1st post if your interseted in my donkey beginnings.
It's been a few days since my last post. I've been on vacation quite a bit lately and since my bad run at WSOP this year I haven't played much, but have turned things around nonetheless. My best stat keeping my my worst days loss at $150. I went to Yosemite this weekend and was able to play a couple hours of some 6 handed 10/20 limit cash games, which isn't my specialty, but fit my situation in case of a disconect or need to quit. I actually had one of my best sessions in a while turning $200 into $1100. So well, I'm going to start increasing my 6 handed cash game play as long as I show a decent per hour rate.
I also took some time to investigate Carbon Poker. According to the site it showed about the same traffic as Cake, however SNG traffic was pretty low filling mainly $20 and under. Maybe if my cash game play works out I might look further. I helped my wife clean up and move out of her classroom today and she is off for the summer. I expect I'll be able to get back to a more full poker schedule for the next 3 months. I'm also hoping to make a move in November upgrading to a full size home in the O.C. so we'll see. Whatever happens it's an exciting good time and even though I'd love to be playing Full-time poker, I know I'm very blessed and am grateful to be in my position and things are moving upward, so I won't complain. GL all.Donkeyherder.

Well it's been a tough road since my carsh and burn in Vegas. I've been a bit busy coming back home and my poker play shows. It seems like I start playing well for a while then get busy or start multi tabling too much and all of a sudden I have a horrendous bad streak. I heard somewhere I guess Chip Reese once said something like "Don't worry about the wins, be concerned and control the losses." Which is what it looks like I'm going to have to do. I have a tendency to start getting a little too loosey goosey and not cutting my losses. Usually the best medicine in my case is to play some cheaper buyins and play super tight until push/fold levels and usually my results turn around.
My poker budy T_dawgonu has been playing well but has hit a few bad runs himself finding himself losing a heads up match on a single river card for a $12,000 seat to WSOP and just missing a seat to Aruba. I did have some success earlier this week in a couple multis, unfortunately, I blew up as a chip leader in one tourney and, got coin flipped out before final table with JJ vs AK 14th/403 in another. I have been very upset with my play and consistant bad beats as of late and am starting to get that "I know I'm gonna get screwed here!" feeling almost every tourney. That's a bad place to be making playing not only a losing deal and not fun. Time for a poker intervention for the rest of the week and hopefully I'll show at least a small profit for the rest of the week. We shall see. So far I'm down 3 solid days in a row, which doesn't sound too horrible, but I can tell by the way I'm busting out recklessly too often.
On a happy note, My little bro graduated from H.S. today. Were planning a fun thing tomorrow. He's gonna be moving in with my Dad and going to school in Riverside,CA. He'll probably be the next Geek Squad Computer pro, so congrats to him.

Once again, the beginning ofmypoker beginingswas May 11th post if your intrested.
Well it could have only been worse if I had taken out more money to lose. lol...I went to Vegas on Thursday to play in Event #9 of the WSOP. I was feeling pretty confident after final tabling the other night. We stayed at the Platinum hotel just off the strip. I have to say if you decide to book a trip to Vegas, check out the rates there first. They had a special going on Hotels.com for 30% off and of course I decide to book it the next morning and by then it went up to 20% off...sigh. Either way the rooms there was the nicest I've stayed in while in Vegas for the same price as those dumpy rooms you would get on the strip and it sits right behind the Flamingo so it's not like it was far off. The only thing some people might have a problem with is it is completely non-smoking and the is NO gaming inside this hotel!! Pretty shocking for a Vegas hotel. Which was all fine for me Since I was playing elsewhere anyways. I guess the Tuscany hotel/casino behind it runs some poker tournaments. The rooms were top notch and over 900 square feet! with a kitchen and full appliances. I know it sounds like a free advertisement here, but it was the only bright spot of the trip for me aside from getting to hang out with my family.
As for the poker, ehemmm... I signed up the night before the tourney which went suprisingly easy compared to past years debacles and hit the ground running on Thursday morning. They started me off at what seemed a relatively novice table and I was running the table aggressively. I started with 3000 chips and had built up to about 5000 in the first hour. Then the table next to megot a little exciting and one guy knocked out 2 players and were short handed. Can you guess who they moved over there....sigh. I was on the big blind so off I went. This table was quite a bit more loose aggressive and I was trying not to get too involved too early. I got a couple decent hands early and took down a solid pot off the big stack aggressor. I was starting to think he might not want to mess with me and then I was dealt a AQs in late position. I raised about 3.5x the blinds which the big aggressive guy I'll call "Bubba" loosely called with his big stack. the flop cam J107, I bet my overcards and gut shot and he called. I didnt put him on much or I figured he woulda raised with all the draws out there. The next card was a 9, giving me a double gutter and 2 overs, and he checked again. I really didnt think he had much or a draw so I quickly fired another big bet. I then got an unexpected announcement of ALLIN!! SIGH......I still didn't think he had much, but he knew he had plenty of chips to push me off my hand. I had over 1/2 my chips already in the pot and reluctantly let my hand go wishing I took my free card on the turn to see if I could hit one of my many outs. Instead I gave him the opportunity to push me off my hand. Anyways, I reluctantly folded only to see him make the same move against another player shortly after and he was called down shoowing absolutely nothing, no draw no pair, zilch!!! This sickened me worse, but at the time hadn't seen him make such a move since I was new to the table and got me to laydown. A few hands later, down to 1800 chips 50/100, "Bubba" raised from EP (Which he did with any 2 cards) and I had AKs. I shoved allin and got a suprise call from the SB as well as Mr. Bubba. the flop came like J72, Turn J, River 10, and Bubba bet the river, showing AJ, grrrrrrrrr. So that was it for my WSOP this year. I whined a little, but was a little relieved I didn't play for 3 days and go out on the bubble for the same goose egg.
I hung out with family the rest of the trip. I dumped $10 into a slot machine, then tried to play some $1-2 NL cash games which was quite the spectacle with multiple raises in the dark from 1st position and actual raises with K2 EP, it's no wonder I would no doubt get sucked out on a few times and drop $200. I then decided to play a $70 SNG which had one player win allin and proceed to play every hand he was dealt and run over the table knocking me out Q9 vs his 45 allin preflop. Then to cap it off I decided to play some hand shuffled blackjack and attempted to use my amatuer card counting skills to get me outta my hole. I eventually got a nice count of +12 on a 6 deck shoe with about half the cards dealt. I raised my bet, dealt an 18, dealer showed a 7 and proceeded to hit a number of cards to make 21. Then next hand at +14 count I put the rest of my money in and was dealt a 13 vs dealer Ace. I hit, needing an 8 or less and was dealt.............a 9 of course!! I proceeded to take my sorry arse back to room before I lost my gas money, lol. All in all I was 0/5 and down $2,000 for the trip. Very bad, my worst trip (gambling wise) ever. But like I said I did have a good time with family and didn't play too poorly, only regretting 1 hand, found a new hotel, and survived to play another day.
Yesterday was my first day of play since my trip and my goal was to have at least an up day and try not to piss off my wife with all my recent play. I was able to accomplish 1 of 2. Can you guess which one?? The least important of the 2....have an up day. I had another good run on a multi only to be coin flipped out before the big money 14th out of like 400, unfortunately, the tournament took much longer than usual and kinda interfeared with some of my wife's plans and I was quickly in the dog house :( I eventually agreed to stick to SNG's and hold off the multi's until her teaching year is over in 2 weeks. It's just so much harder with a baby to try to to play 4,5,6 hour long multi's.
On the good note, I did finish my day on the slight upside, winning a couple sng's and finishing deep in a multi. Tomorrow I take care of the baby while my wife goes to work so that's always a crap shoot on what I get to play. Usually the best play is usually ultra turbo 6 handers (10-20 minutes each) while he's sleeping, which can be 5 min.to 2 hours. I got a little bit of work to do now to get this month back into the positive. GL at the tables, comments and questions are appreciated. Donkeyherder.
Once again, the beginning of this story was May 11th post if your intrested.
Well my last 3 outta 4 days have been pretty good overall. I haven't played much since I've been trying to get everything ready for my Vegas trip to play in WSOP Event #9 6 handed NL $1,500 buyin. I hada couple poor monthly results until last month. I think I really got my together and more focused now that I am in more of a routine with our new baby. I've been wanting to squeeze in one live tournament before I left to kinda take the rust off live play. It's funny how many thousands of hours I've played online you would think live play wouldn't really be much different. Not that I'm uncomfortable with live play, but you definately get a totally different feel for the table and I usually play a ton better when I am forced to be totally focused on one game with no distractions. Plus there's a whole lot more information you can gather that is just not there when you play online. As much success as I've had inonline play I think I really do well if Iplayed more live events. Unfortunately, when you factor in drive time, gas, tips, heavier rake, longer tournaments, and the inability to multi task/table, it usually isn't worth it. Nonetheless I drove down with t_dawgonu to our local cardroom in L.A. to play in a Deep stack $200 buyin multi. There were about 100 players and I was dying to make up for having to leave the last live tournament I played right before the money with a good stack because wife's water broke (baby) as we approached the bubble. My partner unfortunately ran into an unlucky hand. He raised AK early position and I'm not sure if he was reraised, but got some action and flopped like a KQ3. I guess there was some more action and he turned another K - KQ3K, and they both go allin. Of course the other guy had QQ and that's all she wrote for him. With a pretty nice slow structure I was able to really feel out my table and pick up on some pysical tells and tendencies early. Once the antes started kicking in I started to kick in my aggressiveness. I only had one big hand worth noting. I believe everyone folded around to me in the SB and I had a 57 offsuit. Most players are a big fan of limping in the SB and seeing a flop, but I rarely do. I usually either raise or fold unless I want to play a hand and am worried about making the pot too big. I also usually factor in whether I have chips than my opponent. You tend to get less resistance unless they're trigger happy. So in this case I raise about 3.5x the BB and he gives me a call. Flop comes 578, two clubs. Nice!, I flop 2 pair, but I'm rarely happy about bottom 2 pair, and I have no clubs. So I bet a big pot sized bet. He calls. I'm thinking he's got a 6 or a club draw. Next card was I believe a 2 no club. I make another pot bet. He tanks for a little bit and decides to raise a bit mor than 2X my bet. It only made sense to me he was on a draw. He woulda probably raised me earlier with trips or a straight with clubs on board. It a l smelled like a draw and he didn't look that comfortable. So I figured now or never, no sense in letting him draw out if I'm ahead and I pushed allin, which was about 2.5x what he raised me. He sat and tanked for a long time and I knew I had him read write for a draw and was hoping he'd fold. I even started talking to him which I rarely do thinking it might get him to fold. I figured either way he's not getting the right odds to call anyways, but alas he claims he's gonna make a bad call and calls with 49 clubs. This was actually a better hand than I thought with the added 6 for a gut shot. Thankfully he missed and I look like a hero and then had ammunition to fire away at my tight table for the next few hours into the money. I eventually made it to final table, but all the money was in 1st-4th, 1st getting over $7K!! and 5-9th only getting about $400-700. I got KK one hand and a tight player limped and folded to my small smallish raise...sigh. The blinds now were pretty big and I was on the shorter side at about 9x the BB and alot of antes in the middle (about 40% of my stack worth overall) and a loose shover went allin and I had 99 on the button. I decided to call knowing the other guy would shove w/22-88 very easily and the blinds were gonna kill me. He showed AK and as my typical run lately flopped an Ace and I was sent packing after 7 hours to the rail with $400=$175 profit which I then split with my partner= $87.50. lol......sigh. The story of my last few months. I think most importantly, I played very well and feel good going to WSOP. I think I'll be happy with 9th place at WSOP if I could be so lucky :) From what I've heard it's record fields around 3,000 players!! So I'll take my lumps now in return for luck later. Gl all. Wish me luck. Donkeyherder .

Once again, the beginning of this story was May 11th post if your intrested. Again here's a quick recap:
I tried my hand at poker at a Vegas work trip while I was in college, got hooked. Bought a bunch of books. Studied. Played after work at some local card rooms. Opened an online account with Party Poker. Came up with a game plan. Put a $100 on the site. Luckily had a solid start. Built my game on $10 sng's.Won a multi. Hooked up with another poker enthusiest and began spliting profits (Most of which were my big cashes at the time). My partner won a seat to the WSOP Main Event on his own. I then won my own Main Event seat right before it started. Both myself and my partner were able to play and cash the 2006 Main Event.Bought a condo, had a baby, won a few more small multis, and now play on 5 different sites and am looking to build up my bankrolls and go from 9 to 5er by day and part-time online pro by night to full fledged full-time online pro and hopefully live tourney pro down the road.
For now though I focus on the present. I've pretty much caught up to my present day situation. This week I'm trying to get everything ready to go at my real job and at home. I'm looking forward to playing another WSOP event again. I was lucky to get off work today a little early, so I cruised by my T_dawg's house and played a couple of sng's with him on Cake. It was a pretty good session. He plays a little looser strategy than my taste for sng's. I tried to explain my style of play and what my logic was behind my system. Since I have a consistant winning history on sng's I think my strategy works well and if he can benefit from a few of my ideas then great. I think the best thing to come from our talks lately was getting him to be more dilligent in record keeping and more focused and mastering a couple types of tournaments, rather than just playing whatever comes up and "winging it". I think the games these days are a bit tougher and you really have to be not just good, but great at a particular game in order to turn a solid profit. A couple years ago there were enough fish to be profitable in almost any game, but now you gotta be a step ahead. The great players are willing to do the things the majority of the others will not. My buddy has a hard time sitting back and dumping hands and playing the same sng, and taking notes. I suspect this is true with most every other player out there. To me, there lies the greatest opportunity, to be that guy who is willing to find all his edges and not your emotions get the best of you. I personally get a kick out of collecting data and watching everyone else play hand after hand. A great example today when I got home to play.I was in a $50 10 handed sng and one player just ran over the whole table catching cards left and right. The guy was playing every hand and knocked out 4 outta the 10 players. He had an astronomical stack of over 9000 chips and each of us had about 1400 left. Of course what do you think happened? He continued to attack every pot until I caught KK and another player caught something, then another, and another and next thing you know he was the next player out of the game 1 player before the bubble!! lmao!! He could have literally not played a hand for about 15 minutes and been heads up with still a huge chip lead, but instead he got nothing because he had the misconception he needed to be the table bully being the chip leader. Anyways you get the point. Sometimes the best way to knock people out is to let them do it to each other.
Yesterday was a pretty solid day, at least at first. As soon as I got home I registered for a $39 turbo multi and a $50 10 player turbo sng. The multi had only 46 players and was 6 handed, which is my specialty. I played both very well and won my $50 sng, yea!! I was chip leader much of the multi all the way to final table. I eventually got heads up with a maniac who was making huge shoves allin, like 20x the big blind!! So my obvious strategy was just to wait him out until I caught a hand and hope the poker gods shine my way for once. I believe I finally caught KK on him and made him pay and he eventually let me limp my way into a few pots and had a 105 and flopped 2 pair. Luckily he didn't catch and I WON the tourney!! It was the first in a little while, since I've cut back on multi's, about $600, but a win nonetheless. I don't count any wins with less than 50 players on my personal accomplishments, but it was a good day. The rest of the day didn't fair great. I believe I was sucked out in a couple sng's, but went to bed a decent winner overall. I got the day off tomorrow so hopefully things continue well. I'd like to end this month still looking good. I guess I'll go now, GL all, questions and comments are appreciated. Donkeyherder.

Once again, the beginning of this story was May 11th post if your intrested.
Both myself and my partner were able to get many days of play and cash the 2006 Main Event. I was knocked out about 700th/9000 for about $17K and T_Dawgonu cashed about 300/9000 for around 35K!By the end of the year I had won my 7th and 8th decent multi and most importantly hadmy 1st baby on the way!!I guess my ego kicked in a little and I celebrated by using the money to pay off my wife's SUV and buying myself a brand NEW 2007 CORVETTE!! :) My wife then got pregnant and had her water break near the bubble of a major live tournament at the Bicycle club (She was at home). We had our awesome baby boy "Diego" 6 weeks early and my poker career was put on hold for a couple months. I went back to work in January, and I can't tell you how gross it was to go back to a real job. I really started to see how great it would be to play full-time, sleep in, and play all night long. The only problem was during the 3 months I took off work I played alot of different tournaments and didn't really focus on sng's and my game suffered. If I had grinded out sng's the whole time I probably woulda built a nice bankroll but instead I was blowing $200 here and $500 there on random multis without any big cashes to show.
The one thing I was able to accomplish was catching up on some of my research I do for poker and the stock market which enabled me to focus more on my game when I came back to work. I also opened up accounts with Ultimatebet and Absolute Poker. I really needed to get rakeback on my play and was able to get about 30% on those two sites as well as take advantage of their bonuses and expand my game selection. The only downfall was opening new accounts meant starting again with a minimal bankroll and having to play small games and build my way back up. Had I been focused on my game probably cost me alot of money, but since I was so distracted was probably best off in the long run. I know UB and AP have caught alot of heat recently oer a fewcheating players, however, I've personally have never felt cheated at any time and those involved were in very high stakes games. I figure as long as my bankroll is growing I'm not gonna worry. They both run a nice variety of tournaments, some with decent overlay.
When it comes to poker, this year hasn't been too exciting. It's been BABY OVERLOAD!! At least not yet. I do have my hotel booked to play in the WSOP event #9 next week!! I guess if I make a final table that will change my whoie year. last month I played in 2 $1000 entry tourneys and finished in the money right before final table 2 weeks in a row, which of course payed like 5 figures to the top 3 or 4 players. I barely got my money back. It was very dissapointing how just 1 card turning the right way could make a 5 figure difference and I drew the short stick. I have managed to stop throwing most of my baby fits after suckouts and my smashed metal trash can appreciates it, lol. I guess I gotta keep cool around my new kid if I expect my wife to keep letting me play this crazy game. I'm lucky we're able to come to a happy compromise and hopefully my skills will let me eventually play full time some day.
I was able to break my little dry spell over the last few days. Nothing really major, but stopping the bleeding was my most important goal so I stuck with grinding out sng's and tried to play them slightly tighter preflop and after flop. Overall, though I feel pretty good about my sng play. I'm also playing mini multi's pretty well also. I do think my large multi game has suffered and needs a bit more discipline these days. I think I was getting a bit too impatient and not letting certain pots go. I'm not sure if I'm gonna get much play in the next week, while preparing for vacation to Vegas. I would liket o play at least one live Multi before the WSOP. We'll see. GL at the tables. Donkeyherder

The baby was due in early December, but of course with our luck wasn't the case. It was around October 2007, and I just went to visit my wife at her Open House in Long Beach, CAarea (She's an Elementary School Teacher). Of course following the event I shot over tothe Bicycle Club toenter one of their Big October tournaments that night. Itwas the first time I had a chance to play live inmany months and was really looking forward to the tournament. I think it was a $500 buyin and I started off prettystrong. I was playing great and making all the right plays. I remember it was also aBounty tourney were you get money if you knock someone out. I had been playing a few hours and had already knocked out a couple players and it was getting close to getting "in the money". I was involved in a big hand allin and won a huge pot!! YEEEAAHH!!! Sounds great right? That's when I heard the worst noise in the world. It was my cell phone ringing at 11pm. My wife wouldn't call me to bother me in a tourney unless it was really important. CRAP CRAP CRAP. I answered, and all I hear is my wifefreaking out and crying and trying to tell me her water had just broke like 8 weeks early!! :(
I looked down at my chips which were now table leader going into the money in a big tourney and the first live evnt I had played in a while and I knew what I had to do.....sigh. I gathered up my belongings, stood up, and announced I had to go meet my wife at ahospital in Orange,CA about a hour or so away. Looking back I shoulda made a deal with the table somehow to dump my chips in some legal way in turn for something, but at the time I was scared to death that we might lose the baby and my wife's health was at stake and it didn't really matter. I see it as one of those defining moments in your life and there will always be another tournament. Long story short I got to the hospital and the doctors wanted my wife to stay as long as possible to keep the baby in.We ended up staying there for like 3 weeks!! I stayed by her side the whole time and took off work for 3 months!! You gotta love theFamily Leave Act!! I did get to play alot of poker during that time, but was a bit distracted and showed little results. Most importantly, the baby was born 6 weeks early premature, but grew and came home with us after a couple weeks and is now doing fantastic!! Scary stuff!! Now that was one exciting year! I will continue on next post...
Luckily my last couple days have at least stopped the bleeding. I seem to be in a bit of a bad luck run, which I hate to think about becausethey seem to last longer the more you think about it. I haven't lost alot of money, but keep bubblingor finishing 2nd vs. a suckout when I do cash. Usually when this happens I try and watch my aggressiveness and how many hands I'm playing. I can usually tell if I'mnot getting very deep consistently over multiple tourneys, it's usually part my fault.
Iusually like to check out the latest software available to help me keep stats and test strategies. I've heard for a while about Pokerstove, which islike an odds calculator with the ability to insert a few variables andbest part is free to download. I've been playing around with that for a while trying to use it's calculations and integrate it's results with my personalstats and calculations. I'm trying to plugthe results into my formulas and its a pain in the rectal region coming up with big formulas on Excel. Anyways, it's fun to play with and like I said it's free. I've also been trying to find a happy medium betweenmostly Absolute Poker and Cake. I get rakeback on both 30%AP and 33% Cake. The players are bad on Cake, but I get reload bonuses with AP, which aren't deducted from AP's rakeback. I'm also really limit the number of multis I play to only those with overlay, rebuys, or satelite entries I've won. Hopefully, this will cut down my variance and help meget really good again at SNG's and make a steady profit. So far not too bad, but I spread out my bankroll too thin to really make any big moves yet. Well I just shoved with aQ2 and came up short, lol. Guess I can't blame luck there, oh well. Gl all at the tables. Comments and questions appreciated. Donkeyherder

Once again, the beginning of this story was May 11th post if your intrested. Again here's a quick recap:
I tried my hand at poker at a Vegas work trip while I was in college, got hooked. Bought a bunch of books. Studied. Played after work at some local card rooms. I then won my own Main Event seat right before it started. Both myself and my partner were able to get get many days of play and cash the 2006 Main Event. I was knocked out about 700th/9000 for about $17K and he's still going with Humberto Brenes at his table.
Well, now that somehow we both had not only won seats to the Main Event , but both in the money, we were on a total freeroll and my partner had to fight it out with Humberto among others. He ended up getting through the first half of the day unscathed, but lost his allin attempt later on to finish about 300th/9000 for about $35K!!. If I ever had worries before that our deal wasn't so good it was put to rest that week. In fact he also cashed a large tournament online only a couple weeks later and since then we have splitnumerous tournaments, which has really helped us both out flatening out some of the variance that comes with playing multi table tourneys. Our little crew was rollin!!
This was a good omen for the rest of the year. Only a month later I also won 2 more online multi's and a 7th place in a big tournament. I also believe Party Poker started adding 6 handed sng's, which eventually became my bread and butter. Most the players didn't have a clue as how to play them and I quickly started killing them. That was until one sad day. In October 2006, Party Poker, the largest poker site and a few other poker sites buckled after a new law went into effect restricting transactions made onto gambling sites. Party Poker being the largest and more importantly, just went public with it's company selling shares onto the stock market, didn't want to risk any chance of ruin and decided to completely abandon all of it's US customers and prevent any US players from playing on their site. This was a huge blow to the majority of the poker world who for a period of a few weeks wondered if they'd ever see their money in their accounts again. I remember frantically trying to withdraw and wondering if there was anywhere else I could trust playing without suffering the same fate, and would it prove to as profitable as Party Poker? Fortunately there were still a few solid poker sites left that had the balls to stand up to the new unfair law and would fight to keep their sites running. I first opened up an account with Pokerstars which was the next biggest poker site. Once getting a couple bucks on their site I was pleasantly suprised. Unfortunately, it was like starting all over again, but in the end, they picked up a ton of new players and I think is a much better site. It was probably a blessing in disguise.I started to realize the advantage of being able to play on different sites and to be able to maximize game and table selection. I continued to played 6 man sng's and they eventually added turbo sng's which I really played well.
There was one fantastic development in my personal life. My wife and I had been trying for a while to have a baby, but were met with a few different complications. My wife had to go through surgery to fix some of these issues and even then we weren't sure it would ever work out. Well around March my wife came down the stairs one day with a nervous excitement on her face and was about to burst when she told me she was pregnant. OMG!!! Wow. My own kid, so crazy!!
In April 2007, Pokerstars was starting to play satelites for the nex year's WSOP Main Event 2007. I thought I'd try out a few after my success in the previous year. I played a $30 rebuy tourney and would you believe I WON!!! I recorded my 6th major multi table tournament victory and unlike the previous year, Pokerstars had to credit your account with the money and pray that you would cash it out and buy in yourself. I guess because of the new laws. Well as much I wanted a repeat of the previous year, I really needed to build up my new account and I cashed it in. I think I ended up blowing much of it, getting a little bit too cocky with my new found success, so I kept playing the WSOP satelites to try and win another seat. The funny thing was as it got closer and closer to the WSOP, I was really starting to regret not saving the money and playing the event. About a week or two before it was to start I played one last satelite. It was a giant200+ seat gauranteed event. There were almost 7000 players. Would you guess it but I came in 110th!!! I won another seat!!! This time I was gonna play for sure. Or so I thought?? Because I already had won a seat earlier that year Pokerstars would only credit my account with Tournament dollars to be used for play Pokerstars. WWWHHHAAATTT!!! I begged and pleaded with them, but they wouldn't budge. So after winning 2 seats to the 2007 WSOP Main Event I wasn't even going to get to play.
It took me a while to get over the whole thing. My poker buddy didn't win a seat so we both decided to play in the smaller events, which didn't pan out so well. Sighhhh....Well with the baby on the way it was probably best off I didn't blow $10K on 1 tournament and was pretty much being inundated with baby stuff and new parent training.
A few months later I did manage to win my 7th and 8th decent multi tourney. They weren't major scores, but still noteworthy.
I think I've written enough for today. To be continued next post as usual......
As far as my latest results, The last couple day have been a bit brutal. I've played a few Multi's since I've had some extra time and won a seat to another $500+30 WSOP Main Event satelite, which I had AA cracked by QQ, then had some guy call off half his stack from late middle position with KJ vs my EP allin w/66 and my good run went to crap. I also took a pretty bad run on sng's not cashing in 11 straight!!! That's not my worst run ever, but definately was good run killer. I think I was getting a little loose, but had a pretty bad run of bad beats and lost coin flips. I won't get into those too much. I don't think anyone wants to hear about them, but I try to force myself to play a little bit lower than my normal level until things clear up. Easier to say than do. lol. When I first started playing poker I was extremely against the idea of bad Karma or bad feelings can have real effects on a game. I usually find it quite humorous when you see people with all sorts of lucky medalions and such, but as much as I want to believe it's all about the law of statistics and probabilty, I have gone through numerous cycles of "running bad" almost every time it was like I would wach the flop turn and river and as soon as I thought of the cards that could beat me, sure enough they would instantly hit the board. It was like I was negatively willing a bad energy or something. I know it sounds crazy, but I would just get into these really bad moods and the bad beats would just come left and right worse and worse!! Now I really try and play smaller. I also try to not look at the screen if I'm already ahead in the hand and we're all in. It may not make any difference in the card outcome, but for some reason not watching the cards hit the board seems to tone down my enragement when I take a beat. I think I feel like it wasn't my fault so much. In fact, now I usually do the opposite when I'm behind allin. I usually just stare and concentrate on the cards I need to win. It probably is completely crazy, but no matter that, I've found a way to help avoid tilting.
I guess my growing book is long enough for today. GL all at the tables. Wish me luck. I'll be playing Event #9 -6 handed NL $1,500 on June 5th. I just booked my room at the "Platinum". A relatively little known hotel behind the Flamingo that looks like it has killer huge rooms. I'm planning on taking my Mom with me as a delayed Mother's day gift, and then were staying at the Luxor on Friday. Hopefully I make it that far in the tourney...Donkeyherder.

Poker -
Once again, the beginning of this story was May 11th post if your intrested.
I then won my own Main Event seat right before it started and now I've gotten past the 1st day of play.
The one good thing about the huge field of players was you get to rest every other day for a few days. It was incredible up to that point just to be rubbing shoulders on the table and off with the big name pros. While I was playing I at least bumped into (forgive my spelling!) Negraneau, Jesus Fergeson,. Hellmuth, Doyle, Ted Forrest, Devilfish, Scotty, and Men "the master, to name a few. It was a bit weird and exciting, but by my 2nd playing day the intimidation was gone and I was mainly worried about screwing up and donking off my chips. Our main goal was to get through the day each day we played and luckily we both got throughround 2!!We were pretty pumped. The odds of us both winning a seat and making it through 2days of play, was quite a long shot, so we were thrilled and were realistically starting to lookhopefully toone of us to cashing. Considering we both won our seats just 1 minimum cash would net us at least $5K each or nothing if we don't. Obviously the experience was awesome and will stay with us the rest of our lives, but we have to cash something or we could be whinning till the day we die about some bad beat or how something "almost" was.
I'm not sure about our positions throughout the tournament since it was 2 years ago but we celebrated that night in another VIP Part Poker party and hit day 3 with confidence. It was basically a standard 3x raise and continuation bet ritual for me until I got too low and had to shove. Pretty basic. Again, we made it through Day 3 and played pretty much all the days until around 2am each day. So so grueling!! I think it was day 4 that we were shooting for a money finish and all the players were together and widdling down on the main tournament room. As the players get bounced more spectators come in to watch as they condense tables. Again it was like playing for the Lakers on home court!!. We both also had shots of both of us cashing at this point and I think I had to take a few stands with semi strong hands and shove to stay alive. I think each break we were paranoid about how the other was doing while at the same time rushing to beat everyone to the restrooms.
After a reassurance that we were both still miraculously alive we went back to war praying we could get through just a few more hours and make the money. Again, we grinded away and I didn't really have enough chips to play aggressively as the bubble came near. There was definately tension in the air as the bubble drew near. It finally got down to a couple spots away from the money. I was in ok shape but no room for error. A couple more busted out and it was down to only 1 player away and my table all of a sudden woke up. There was a raise from a solid player, a call, and another call by the BB. I wish I could remember the exact cards but the original raiser continued to bet the flop. I think the 2nd player called and the 3rd player reraised back and the original raiser calls. The turn brings a connecting card and the original raiser check raises the guy allin. I was thinking the whole time that the other guy needs to fold and it wasn't worth playing on, but the guy was one of those cocky young guys who acted like he was some unknown superstar and calls the guy down with like a middle pair and the original raiser caught a big card on the turn knocking the guy out on the bubble!! Of course what happens? A bunch of cameras jam their lenses right in the guy's face as he screamed, berated his opponent, and about cried in his lap!! I almost felt bad for him except he was such an idiot and his play deserved it. He did win a shot at a sng for next years WSOP Main Event, but I think he ran off in shame before it was announced. In the meanwhile, of course, that everyone had made in the money and the whole place blew up off the hook with celebration, as everyone left had cashed in the biggest WSOP Main Event (Or possibly any other tournament to even today!! YYYYAAHHOOO!!!!!!!
This was also my biggest cash in any tourney to date. Unfortunately for me my run went south by the end of the night. I got involved allin with a rich business man allin w/AK and he made a few loose calls w/77 and he sucked out on the turn after I hit a King on the flop. I finished around 700th place out of 9000 for about $17K!. The better news was my poker buddy was still alive and I was now on a freeroll, no longer second guessing whether our split deal was one sided bad deal. T_dawg was rolling, but guess who was in his way? The one and only Humberto Brenes. To be continued....
As for my recent results, I've been strictly playing SNG's to try and build my bankrolls up and it's been paying dividends!! I've been coming in positive like 2/3 of the days this month and steadily taking down decent scores a few hours each day at a time. Currently I'm back to 3 up days in a row. I've had a really busy work week as well due to Memorial weekend holiday and I need to book a hotel for the WSOP event number 9, a $1,500 6 handed tourney. I can't wait. Catch ya later. GL at the tables.
