So, is anybody tired of playing in or hosting the same freeze-out or re-buy tournament week after week? Anybody looking for a change of pace and a different tournament structure? Well, I have a couple suggestions for you. Obviously, beyond any shadow of a doubt, no matter what variation of poker you’re playing, the most commonly played tournament structures are [...]
This happened in a home tournament: Two players limped and the player in the big blind checked. The dealer stood up to deal the flop, but dropped most of the deck onto the floor. Even cards remaining in the dealer's hand were exposed, including the bottom card since he somehow managed to also drop the cut card. One of the players stated everybody should retrieve their bets and the hand should be declared a misdeal. Since action took place, I ruled the deck should be reconstructed as best as it could be and the hand should continue. I had the dealer reconstruct the deck, cut the cards once (because the bottom card was revealed ), and then continue with the burn and flop. Was this the correct decision?
My Uncle Rollo once said to me, "Son." Uncle Rollo always called me son. He said, "Son, every poker player goes through a rough streak in which he can't seem to do anything right, and when he finally gets his money in good, he can't even win a showdown. When this happens to you, you'll have to make a choice." With that, Uncle Rollo walked away and left me standing in complete befuddlement.
You may have heard me talk about my Uncle Rollo in previous articles. Uncle Rollo was a great poker player and he taught me a lot; however, there is one thing that few people know about Uncle Rollo. He was also a great poker tournament host. Uncle Rollo ran the best home games in town. He may not have ran the biggest dollar games, and he certainly didn't have the most expensive equipment in town, but he knew what people wanted from a poker tournament and he knew how to deliver.
The next person to post a new thread or respond to a current one on The Grand Slam Poker Source Forum wins, well, absolutely nothing. I really don’t have anything of value that I can send to you. So, let’s say, the next person to post a new thread or respond to a current one [...]
This is Part II of a two-part article on playing short-stacked in No Limit Texas Hold'em Tournaments, but avoiding getting too short-stacked. In Part I, I discussed the concept of The Plateau Theory and the Tumble Factor to help measure your chip stack status in a tournament. In Part II, I will discuss the types of hands that players may have when short-stacked and whether or not they are worthy of playing.
When I was a young poker player, back in the day, I was lucky enough to have a mentor. You may have seen me refer to him in the past - my Uncle Rollo. He wasn’t really my uncle, and I’m relatively certain his name wasn’t even Rollo, but that’s what he made me call [...]
Has anybody noticed lately how online players have suddenly decided they have the right to tell everybody at their table how they should be playing their chips? Is this a new trend, or have I just noticed it more lately? In fact, it really seems to be getting bad in Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo. There are [...]
OK, folks, I have a one-question quiz for you. I’m putting you all on your honor - this is not an open book test. The question is simple - which situation below is the most likely to propel you to a tournament victory? Of course, the situations are not as simple to evaluate as it may seem. All [...]
I was extremely bored a couple days ago. So, I logged onto PokerStars to pass a little time and play a little “play money” poker. (Yes, I know, I know…but I was bored.) I sat down at a 100/200 No Limit Omaha Hi/Lo table. Much to my surprise, a couple players immediately requested that I [...]
If I had a quarter everytime I heard somebody whine at a poker table, let’s just say I’d have enough money to play in “The Big Game”, get my rear end handed to me, and not care about losing the money. I’m not complaining, though. If you listen real hard to the whiners, they’re telling [...]
The following article was originally published by The Grand Slam Poker Source on January 25, 2008 with the title “Mentally Preparing for the Big Tournament”. In light of the new year, I thought now would be a good time to revisit it as part of my “get back to basics” New Year’s Resolution. So, I’m republishing [...]
First, and foremost, I’d like to wish everybody a very Happy New Year. I hope you all had a very profitable 2008. I know I did but, like everybody, there is certainly room for improvement in my game. So, as I do periodically, especially at the beginning of each year, I take a look back at [...]
More and more, I see a growing trend in online beginners playing Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) and Pot Limit Omaha Hi/Lo (PLO8) without understanding the importance of pre-flop play and hand selection. Some online players believe you should never raise pre-flop, but limp with about anything. Other online players believe you should raise with any four cards. While I don’t [...]
