'Bet it all' not so crazy

Date: Tue, Feb 22, 2011 Internet

Soldiers Gambling with DiceNext time you see someone lump his or her entire wad on a colour or number at the casino tables, don't be so quick to sneer. According to Significance ('statistics making sense') it might not be so crazy after all. (Make sure you read the comment someone's added at the end of the article).

Spin this... double-header. Oh the shame...

Date: Wed, Feb 9, 2011 Internet

Rejoice (Katherine Jenkins album)Another two in the series highlighting those fabulous PR coups that make you rejoice to be a gambler, hence the otherwise utterly gratuitous use of a photo of Katherine Jenkins.

[Whom, we would like to stress, has probably never embezzled anything in her life and wouldn't dream of endorsing such behaviour. It's not as if she needs the money, after all.]

Industrial Edition cards to go with your home game's industrial language

Date: Mon, Feb 7, 2011 Internet

When something's been designed by a man called Homer Liwag, you simply have to take a look...
"Playing cards truly unlike anything you've seen before. It's never been possible. It's never been done. DeckONE : Industrial Edition Playing Cards.
The gunmetal colored box glistens in the light and demands attention with its hardened steel aesthetic. The box is made of paper 25% thicker than the Sentinel tuck case. These cards protect themselves..."

Blindness rules as civic leaders sucked into the mug's game

Date: Fri, Feb 4, 2011 Internet

Slot machine. This post from Sport is Made for Betting really intensifies the dismay I've felt for some time, at how more and more town and city councils on both sides of the Atlantic seem to be clinging to gambling as a budget-saver, like drowning men to a life raft:

"Interesting discussion in today's Racing Post about 'plagues' of betting shops in city centres. Councils and residents are getting sick of them, the big bookies love them and can't get enough retail shops.

"Why I hear you ask? Racing's share of the gambling pound is ever decreasing, more and more punters are betting online and you rarely see anyone in the betting shops that already exist... except standing around the FOBTs (Fixed Odds Betting Terminals) or glorified slot machines. And that's what brings in the profits..."
Ploughing through the newswires for gambling tales as I do each week, it's impossible not to feel the hairs on the back of your neck standing up for all the wrong reasons, as you read one story after another of state legislatures in America voting to throw their doors wide open to a proliferation of gambling outlets. Rest assured it's not for pretty lights and the thrill of the game.

Sat on many of the committees concerned, I have no doubt, are men and women who wouldn't dream of describing themselves as gamblers in polite conversation, preferring to bandy the old 'mugs game' cliche around, with superior smiles.

Give them a gaping hole in their accounts, probably caused by goodness-knows-what form of fiscal incompetence, on the other hand and suddenly a pastime they consider beneath them is good enough to be force-fed wholesale to those whom they purport to serve.

You won't be surprised to hear that I don't want to see gambling banned but between that and its current ubiquitousness lies a happy medium that, certainly in the UK, pertained not so long ago. If you wanted gambling, you had to go out of your way to find it.

Casinos were low-key, bookies were dots on the landscape rather than a rash and advertising was limited. It was something you had to seek out, not something that was thrown in your face at every opportunity, inevitably putting gambling onto the radar of many more people not temperamentally suited to it.

Making it mainstream, as natural to the populace as buying a pint of milk, is not healthy and not just for the obvious reason. As Sport is Made for Betting points out, "What city centre really wants to have its streets full of betting shops, pound shops and junk food outlets?"

A city whose civic leaders' concern for the welfare of their citizens goes out of the window whenever their beancounter's rear end needs covering, that's what.

Some fine, upstanding pillars of their community need to stop kidding themselves. They are all mugs now and when gambling bloggers are flagging up the problem, you get an inkling of just how serious it has become.

Danny Sheridan's advertising has hopefully moved on

Date: Wed, Feb 2, 2011 Internet

.
A dangerous advertising game to play, when your name is a fairly-catchy 'Danny Sheridan' and respondents to this tipster's ad are invited to write to your post office box...

The ad looks circa 1980s and Danny is still around and apparently doing rather well for himself, so we must assume that either American punters aren't big on irony or he fired his copywriter.

Film review: Lottery Ticket a loser?

Date: Fri, Jan 28, 2011 Internet

.
.
.
"Kevin Carson lives in the projects with his grandmother and works in a local shoe store. He's just graduated from school but can't afford to go to college. However, his luck changes when he decides, for the first time in his life, to buy a lottery ticket. His numbers come up and he's the only winner of the $370 million prize but, when he goes to make his claim, the Lottery Office is closed for the holidays and he has to wait three days before he can claim his check...

...The idea of making a film about the three days before a winner picks up the lottery check is a great concept and the perfect setting on which to build tension..." - from a review at News Blaze

Why craps out when you can Sexy Love Dice in?

Date: Mon, Jan 24, 2011 Internet

The classical definition of probability works ...I see the tables emptying fast if this one catches on:

"A fun way to put some spice into the bedroom and reconnect with your partner, Love Dice are a creative tool for couples.
"There are many variations to Love Dice. The labeling ranges from mild to explicit in nature.Typically, one die will be labeled with various body parts such as mouth and neck. The other will usually be labeled with instructions such as 'kiss' or 'Blow....'

...Step 5
Play continues until the Love Dice are put aside for other activities or both players deem the game to be over"
No, there isn't a prize for the best 'come bet' or 'bet the horn' gags. I aim only to inform.

Environmental message (or, 'those winnings must be recycled somehow')

Date: Fri, Jan 21, 2011 Internet

Not everyone's cut out for the orgy idea and bathing in asses' milk can present logistical problems but if you really do want to make some kind of statement with that windfall you've just snagged at the tables, a $777 burger still ticks a lot of hedonistic boxes.

"How can a burger be so pricey? By combining Kobe beef, lobster, caramelized onions, brie, pancetta and 100-year-old balsamic vinegar…oh, and by being served alongside a bottle of Rose Dom Perignon Champagne" - Mental Floss
Paris Casino has them but be warned. On top of the more obvious health warning, this kind of consumption may not get you into heaven.

Olea Nova - because jokers have lives too

Date: Wed, Jan 19, 2011 Internet

So often discarded by cardplayers, it was probably only a matter of time before someone started speculating as to what the jokers in the pack got up to in their spare time.

Such is the inspiration behind the gambling art of Olea Nova, a Russian-born artist now living in Chicago:
"The Jokers in my work are not costumed performers -- they symbolize human desires and motivations. As jokers, they have a habit of creating interruptions and distractions. My Joker is like the Mephistopheles character in Goethe's "Faust," though perhaps not so sinister. He is part tempter, part illusionist. He is the person you want to see him as, and he takes advantage of your dreams to work his will. People see his many faces depending on their desires"
