Indulgence: Dinner at Emeril’s Delmonico

Date: Sun, May 2, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

One of the highlights of our December trip to New Orleans was dinner at Emeril’s Delmonico. This was one of the events on our itinerary that I was looking forward to most. Many foodies have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with Chef Emeril Lagasse, and I am no different. His TV shows shtick sometimes obscures [...]

Maryhill: Such a Thrill In Washington Whites

Date: Thu, Apr 29, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

While not as racy as some of the tunes on the radio today, the song made it clear that Mary Hill did what she wanted without worrying about what other people thought. At that age I had more fun playing football outside with the boys rather than inside playing Barbies with the girls, so it's little wonder that I identified with the lyrics.

HR 5034: What if Wine Were Peaches …

Date: Tue, Apr 27, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

All the people in other states still want your peaches. But they will not have the freedom to buy them. They will have no choice but to buy peaches from their own states, or whatever the peach distributors want to sell them. They will have no competition, so they can charge peach lovers as much as they want for their peaches.

Washington State Wines: Tildio Winery

Date: Sun, Apr 25, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

The first thing you'll notice about a bottle of Tildio wine is the unique graphical logo - almost like a wood cut, of a bird within a bird. Katy and Milum Perry chose the Spanish name for the Kildeer bird that arrives early each Spring to breed in their vineyard.

If Passed, HR 5034 will Cheat Wine Consumers

Date: Wed, Apr 21, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

While most consumers hurried to finish taxes by the April 15th deadline, something sinister was afoot in the United States House of Representatives. A move to take away your rights to buy wine directly from the winery. To limit your choices to whatever is sold in your local store.

Galveston Wine Festival and Don’t be the dumbass redux

Date: Sat, Apr 17, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

Today Amy and I are going to head down to the 2010 Galveston Food and Wine Festival.  Regular readers will know that we have a soft spot (Amy’s heart, my head) for Galveston, so we don’t really need an excuse to visit the island, but this gives us a great one. Here is how this [...]

Wine Pairing Recipes: Seafood Medley Stew

Date: Mon, Apr 12, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

This recipe for Seafood Medley Stew can be followed exactly, but where is the fun in that? Use it as a jumping-off point. Adjust the spices and ingredients to make it your own. Or, like me, make it differently every time. I call for one jalapeño below, but feel free to use more, less or some other pepper. In fact, the batch pictured featured a mild Hatch pepper augmented by about 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes.

New Sauvignon Blanc on the Block: Cornerstone Cellars

Date: Sun, Apr 11, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

Last night we paired a sample of 2009 Cornerstone Cellars Sauvignon Blanc, with a spicy variation of Joe's Seafood Medley Stew*. I like my food muy caliente! and this wine was perfect to take out a little of the heat from the serrano pepper. But to enjoy all the subtleties and nuances in this beautiful new Napa white, I was glad to have saved enough to have a glass or two on its own.

Darryl Beeson

When I signed up for Sommelier classes a few years ago, I really didn’t know what to expect. I had some vague ideas about some professorial type lecturing us as we took copious notes about wine. Looking around at my classmates, I guessed that we all had similar vague notions. Then Darryl Beeson walked in [...]

A Really Twisted Winery Owner

Date: Sun, Apr 4, 2010 Wine Tasting Winery Blogs Wine Business

Located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills of California, Twisted Oak is a terroir-based winery that specializes in delicious handcrafted wines made in the shadow of a 350-year old California Blue Oak tree. Not only is the tree the winery's namesake, but its likeness appears on the label of Twisted Oak bottles. But it's not just good wine that has made Twisted Oak so successful, but Stai's clever use of a bit of "The Princess Bride" influenced themes in creating and promoting a wine persona that includes pirates, debauchery and rubber chickens.
