I was glancing at the Winetastic archives the other day and realised that the blog will have existed for three years as of today. Happy birthday to us? The real question of course is which wine to open in celebration…
Up until this review I had not tried any Clonakilla wines, however now I think it is fair to say that if you live in NSW and are feeling a bit parochial, but not in the mood for something from the Hunter, then the Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2007 will be a safe bet.
During a recent trip to the Mount Pleasant cellar door, one of the staff kindly slipped us a bottle of the Brands Laira "Blockers" Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 to try. I have not really explored the Brands label, a stablemate to Mount Pleasant within the McWilliams company, however this particular bottle was festooned with gold trophy stickers.

Yesterday afternoon I felt a large disturbance in the wine blogging force, as if millions of keyboards were clacking away, then were silenced. Fortunately all is not doom and gloom since I was soon notified by Gary Walsh of Winorama fame that he had teamed up with Campbell Mattison of The Wine Front to form [...]
I noticed that Penley Estate’s “Phoenix” Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 has been getting some good press as a great value for money red with a little cellaring potential in its back pocket. Armed with this information I picked up a bottle to review at the thrifty price of $17. Very drinkable for a young cabernet, showing aromas [...]
It seems like only yesterday I was reviewing the 2005 vintage of this wine, since then "The Story" by wine maker Rory Lane has made some real noise in the wine world, grabbing high praise and high scores from the likes of James Halliday.
It is said great wine starts in the vineyard and Lengmeil certainly have a head start in this regard, boasting some of the oldest shiraz producing vines in the world. This up and coming Barossa producer has made an intense and bold, yet strangely elegant wine from a blend of Shiraz (48%), Grenache (42%), [...]
Turkey Flat is an historic estate in the Barossa Valley and is widely recognised in the wine world as one of the New World's foremost rosé producers. Made from a unique blend of Grenache, Cab Sauv, Shiraz and Dolcetto, the Turkey Flat 2007 Rosé lives up to the high standards set by previous vintages.
Nestled on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range of New South Wales, Mudgee has had a one hundred and fifty year viticultural history and over eighty years of association with Italian wine. di Lusso is at the forefront of showcasing some excellent Italian varietals from a region well suited to growing these exciting grapes.
Usually I ramble on a bit about the background of a wine, however Wynns Black Label Cabernet 2006 really does not need any introduction. I will cut right to the chase and recommend buying a 6-pack for the cellar, especially now that the wine is sealed under screwcap.
Last Saturday Gem and I attended the Good Food & Wine Show at the Sydney Exhibition Center. It was crowded, noisy and the wines ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous, but I figure it is worthwhile giving a plug to the wineries who stood out above the crowd.
We have previously reviewed the entry level "Hard Yards" Shiraz from Sylvan Springs here on Winetastic and found it to be most agreeable. As you can imagine when a bottle of their premium Sylvan Springs Cyril's Reserve Shiraz 2006 arrived unannounced, I was somewhat excited. It is fair to say that Sylvan Springs are currently doing a lot right at both the budget and super-premium level.
It appears as if we saved the best for last when it came to reviewing three wines from Old Mill Estate, their 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon being the pick of the bunch.
